Pen Model Project

The goal of this project was to model and look dev a simple hard surface object but try to it as accurately as I could. I used Maya and Arnold. Some difficulties that I ran into was trying to get the specular break up on the rubber and plastic bits to read in different lighting conditions and different angles without being too strong. I wanted to try and use Substance Painter, but since all the textures were straight forward plastics and metals it really didn’t make sense to complicate things by sending it to Substance for texturing. One of the fun things that I learned was using noise texture in the shader graph. In my past experience I haven’t used the shader graph that much other than to plug in texture maps from outside programs. In my compositing work I am constantly using noise textures to break up textures and give a more natural look. It was interesting to learn that the shader graph is more capable than what I have been using it for.
